It has been said that when we become a parent starts even before conception, it begins at the idea. For some though, the journey to being a parent happens much later in the child’s life cycle. Accepting the responsibility of another persons life, health and well-being is the biggest commitment there is. But, when we aren’t yet fully committed to our own life, health and well-being, it becomes in insurmountable challenge to offer this lacking force within us to others. From my own experience, I don’t think my father actually ever accepted his role as parent fully, it never became a full expressed experience for him. Mainly because he had not figured out how to support himself adequately- how could he be able to that for others? Mothers who are using opioids during pregnancy face this challenge- support for parents in times of need, at whatever stage of the parent cycle they are in, so that they can be the best versions of themselves for their children.
